Bangladesh’s interim government chief advisor, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has asserted that Dhaka is the “only guardian of the ocean” for Northeast India, which remains landlocked. His remarks, made during a four-day visit to China (March 26-29), were widely shared by the interim government on social media.

Yunus’s comments highlight Bangladesh’s strategic importance to India’s Northeast, raising concerns in New Delhi. He also emphasized strengthening ties with China, calling Beijing a “good friend” and seeking increased investment to stabilize Bangladesh’s struggling economy.
During his visit, Yunus met Chinese President Xi Jinping, projecting China as a counterbalance to India. As he prepares to attend the BIMSTEC summit in Thailand later this week, he has requested a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though India has yet to confirm. With Modi in Thailand on April 3-4, Bangladesh’s growing alignment with China adds complexity to regional dynamics.
