INTERVIEW OF AUTHOR MUKHPREET S. KHURANA WITH DE MODE

Q: “Rubaru” beautifully captures the duality of human emotions—how did the idea for this collection come to life, and what does the title signify to you personally?

A. Rubaru is a quiet invitation to meet yourself—your shadows, softness, and strength. Born from moments of anxiety and reflection, these verses became a way to sit with emotion, not escape it. Rubaru reminds us that healing begins with vulnerability, clarity comes in stillness, and light exists even in darkness. It’s not about fixing—just being fully, honestly present.

Q: Your poetry often explores themes like mental health and vulnerability. What role has writing played in your own journey through these experiences?

A. Writing has been both mirror and medicine for me—a way to sit with what I don’t yet understand. It became a quiet ritual, helping me hold pain without being defined by it. On the page, I could bleed gently, name gratitude, and unlearn shame. More than expression, writing taught me this: vulnerability isn’t weakness—it’s courage in motion.

Q: Many of your poems carry a quiet strength rooted in mindfulness and gratitude—how have these practices shaped your worldview and creative process?

A. Mindfulness and gratitude changed not just my writing, but how I see. I stopped chasing meaning in big moments and began noticing it in quiet ones—a cup of tea, a pause, a breath. They taught me to feel without fixing, to notice without needing control. Together, they turned life into poetry—gentle, intentional, and full of quiet strength.

Q: There’s an old-school charm in your love for handwritten letters and simple joys. How do these values influence your poetry and your connection with readers?

A. There’s a quiet magic in handwritten letters—in their slowness, their care. That’s the feeling I try to bring into my poetry: gentle, unhurried, and personal. In a world that rushes by, I believe in lingering. In simple joys and honest presence. Sometimes, a poem isn’t an answer—it’s just a small note that says, “You’re not alone.”

Q: In Rubaru, the language feels both intimate and universal. How do you strike a balance between personal introspection and relatability in your writing?

A. I write from a deeply personal place—not to resonate, but to be real. And in that honesty, others often see themselves. Rubaru wasn’t written for everyone; it was written to meet myself. But somehow, it met others too. That’s the beauty of poetry: it begins in one heart, but speaks a language we all understand. Realness is what connects us.

Q: You emphasize that “vulnerability is a pathway to growth.” What would you say to someone who finds it difficult to open up emotionally?

A. Vulnerability isn’t about baring it all—it’s about letting yourself be seen, even a little, by someone safe. It can start with a simple “I’m not okay.” The fear is valid, but so is the courage to show up as you are. In those quiet moments of honesty, we begin to heal, connect, and truly understand ourselves.

Q: Spiritual growth is a recurring undercurrent in your verses. How do spirituality and poetry intersect for you as a writer and as a person?

A. Poetry and spirituality share a language of wonder and stillness. Writing is my form of prayer—listening, slowing down, and being present. Spiritual growth isn’t about certainty; it’s about being open to grace, grief, and moments that remind me of my place in the world. Poetry helps me hold these moments, turning silence and doubt into sacred dialogue.

Q: What was the most emotionally challenging poem for you to write in Rubaru, and why?

A. Each poem in Rubaru was both challenge and awakening, peeling back reality to reveal truths and hidden treasures. It embodies authentic dialogues with the self—where healthy confrontation meets comfort. Rubaru demands vulnerability as a choice: an invitation to open pathways to healing and brighter perspectives. Stitched with love and wrapped in acceptance, it’s a gift honoring both silences and voices.

Q: The book offers a sense of companionship to readers going through inner struggles. Was that an intentional goal while writing, or something that evolved naturally?

A. I didn’t set out to write a book to guide others—I just wanted to be honest with myself. But in sharing my struggles, others gently said, “Me too.” Rubaru wasn’t meant to be a companion, but it became one. Not a solution, but a soft presence. A voice that quietly reminds you: you’re not alone, and never have to be.

Q: In a fast-paced digital age, what advice would you give to young poets or readers who want to slow down and rediscover the beauty in everyday moments?

A. In a world that rushes, poetry lives in the pause. It’s not about perfect lines—it’s about noticing. The light on your bedsheet. The sound of pouring coffee. A passing smile. These moments matter. So slow down. Write honestly. Look closely. Because when you pay attention, life doesn’t shrink—it deepens. And that’s where poetry truly begins.

Q: Looking ahead, how do you envision your poetic voice evolving? Are there new themes or forms you’re eager to explore in your future work?

A. My poetic voice is always deepening—not changing, but unfolding. I’m drawn to silence that listens, to softness, to sacred unknowing. Future work may hold more pauses, more inward light—gratitude, grief, gentle joy, and divine love that transcends form. I want to write like a conversation, not a performance. Above all, I want to stay curious, honest, and quietly present.
