Literary style has evolved continuously, shaped by cultural shifts, historical events, and changing ideas about language and storytelling. From the earliest oral traditions to contemporary experimental narratives, each era reflects the values and concerns of its time through distinct forms of expression.

In ancient literature, storytelling was closely tied to oral performance. Epics such as The Iliad and The Mahabharata relied on rhythm, repetition, and grand imagery to aid memorization and captivate listeners. Language was formal and elevated, often centered on heroic deeds, mythology, and moral lessons.

The medieval period introduced a blend of religious devotion and chivalric romance. Literary style during this era became more symbolic and allegorical, as seen in works like The Divine Comedy. Writers used rich metaphors and structured forms to explore faith, duty, and the human soul.

With the Renaissance came a renewed focus on individualism and human emotion. Writers experimented with poetic forms, dramatic dialogue, and complex character development. Shakespeare’s works, for example, combined lyrical language with psychological depth, marking a major shift toward realism and emotional nuance.

The rise of the novel in the 18th and 19th centuries transformed literary style further. Authors such as Jane Austen and Charles Dickens emphasized social observation, detailed settings, and relatable characters. Prose became more accessible, reflecting everyday life and societal change.

In the modern and postmodern eras, literary style grew increasingly diverse. Writers began to challenge traditional structures, experimenting with stream of consciousness, fragmented narratives, and unconventional perspectives. Today, literary style continues to evolve, embracing global voices, digital influences, and new ways of storytelling that redefine how stories are told and experienced.
