In a symbolic rebuke of President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, the US Senate passed a resolution against certain levies imposed on Canada. The resolution, introduced by Democrats, was supported by four Republicans who broke party lines, passing with a 51-48 vote.

The measure sought to overturn Trump’s national emergency declaration under the International Economic Emergency Powers Act, which justified tariffs on Canada by linking it to the fentanyl crisis. Democrat Senator Tim Kaine dismissed the claim as “made-up,” asserting that the crisis stems from Mexico and China.
Republican Senator Rand Paul, a co-sponsor, criticized tariffs as a “terrible mistake” that would increase consumer prices. Despite Senate approval, the resolution is unlikely to pass the House, where the Republican majority has moved to block it. The vote, however, highlights bipartisan opposition to Trump’s trade policies and signals discontent within his own party.
