The United States and Ukraine have signed a pivotal minerals deal aimed at deepening economic ties and supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction. Signed in Washington by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, the agreement establishes a joint investment fund and grants the US access to Ukraine’s rare earth mineral reserves. The deal comes after a tense Oval Office meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukraine’s leadership, which led to a temporary halt in military aid.

Described by Bessent as a “new form of US commitment,” the agreement ensures Ukraine retains full sovereignty over its minerals while facilitating long-term US investment. Prime Minister Denys Shmygal praised it as “equal and beneficial.” Svyrydenko noted that in addition to financial input, the US may provide further aid, including air defense systems. The accord underscores a renewed bilateral focus on peace and prosperity in Ukraine amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
