Former President Donald Trump announced that US Steel will remain headquartered in Pittsburgh, citing a major investment boost from its partnership with Japan’s Nippon Steel. The collaboration, he said, will generate 70,000 jobs and inject $14 billion into the U.S. economy, mostly within 14 months. Following his statement on TruthSocial, US Steel shares surged nearly 24% on Friday, according to AFP.

Trump praised his tariff policies, claiming they would restore American manufacturing: “Steel will once again be, forever, MADE IN AMERICA.” The announcement reignites interest in the US Steel–Nippon Steel merger first proposed in December 2023. Although the $14.9 billion deal was blocked by President Joe Biden over national security concerns, Trump’s administration reopened the case in May 2025. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) has been tasked with evaluating the national security risks and must provide its recommendations within 45 days.
