A life-threatening deep freeze continues to hold large parts of the United States in its grip after a powerful winter storm swept from the Deep South to the Northeast, leaving at least 38 people dead. The storm unleashed heavy snow, freezing rain, and dangerously low temperatures, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and triggering widespread travel disruptions.

Roads were paralysed, flights grounded, and emergency services stretched thin as hazardous conditions persisted. Officials said many of the reported deaths were linked to hypothermia, weather-related accidents, carbon monoxide poisoning from improper heating, and injuries sustained during snow removal.

The prolonged cold has dramatically reshaped landscapes across the Northeast. In New York City, floating ice now fills parts of the Hudson River, highlighting the severity of the sustained sub-freezing temperatures. Several cities have recorded their coldest conditions in years, with authorities urging residents to remain cautious as the extreme weather continues.
