Just a day after announcing a landmark energy partnership with Pakistan, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 19% tariff on Pakistani goods as part of his expanded "Liberation Day" tariff initiative. Trump highlighted a preliminary deal centered on the joint development of Pakistan's so-called "massive oil reserves"—though specifics remain unclear. Sharing the update on Truth Social, Trump called it a “significant beginning” for long-term energy collaboration. He also hinted at Pakistan exporting oil to India and mentioned that the U.S. would soon select an oil company to lead the partnership. As part of the deal, Pakistan will begin importing U.S. crude, moving away from Middle Eastern suppliers. Cnergyico, Pakistan’s top refiner, confirmed a 1-million-barrel WTI crude import from Vitol scheduled for October.
