US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on medium- and heavy-duty trucks imported into the United States, effective November 1, 2025. Shared on his platform Truth Social, Trump said the move aims to protect American truck manufacturers from “unfair outside competition,” benefiting companies like Peterbilt, Kenworth, Freightliner, and Mack Trucks.

The tariff applies to delivery trucks, garbage trucks, school buses, transit buses, semi-trucks, and other heavy-duty vocational vehicles. Top exporters to the US include Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Finland. Under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, trucks with at least 64% North American content remain tariff-free.
The move aligns with Trump’s protectionist trade agenda, promoting domestic manufacturing. Industry reactions are mixed: groups like the Coalition for a Prosperous America support it as a win for US workers, while the US Chamber of Commerce warns of potential trade disruptions and economic impacts.
