A London-bound Air India flight, AI171, crashed into a residential area in Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad, shortly after takeoff on Thursday afternoon. The Boeing 787, carrying 242 people—including 230 passengers and 12 crew members—had departed from runway 23 at 1:39 pm. Moments later, it issued a "Mayday" distress call, signaling a life-threatening emergency. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed the call was made, but communication with the aircraft was lost soon after.

Flightradar24 reported its last signal was received seconds after takeoff. Onboard were 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Eyewitnesses captured terrifying visuals of the crash, with smoke engulfing the neighborhood. A part of the aircraft was seen lodged atop a building. While official casualty figures are awaited, more than 100 fatalities are feared. Ahmedabad Airport has been shut indefinitely as rescue operations continue amid the devastation.
