Queen Mother Sirikit of Thailand, revered for her dedication to rural development, traditional craft preservation, and environmental protection, passed away on Friday at the age of 93. The mother of King Vajiralongkorn and wife of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, she had been hospitalised since 2019 and succumbed to a blood infection at Chulalongkorn Hospital in Bangkok.

Her Majesty’s condition had deteriorated since October 17 despite medical intervention. King Vajiralongkorn has ordered a year-long mourning period for the royal family. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul cancelled his trip to Malaysia ahead of the ASEAN Summit to oversee funeral arrangements. Tributes have poured in from across the nation, with citizens mourning the loss of a figure many regarded as “a mother to the nation.” Queen Sirikit’s public appearances had been rare in recent years following King Bhumibol’s death in 2016.
