South Koreans are voting in a pivotal snap presidential election on Tuesday, June 3, following the dramatic ouster of President Yoon Suk Yeol. His removal came after the Constitutional Court upheld his impeachment by Parliament on April 4, triggered by his imposition of martial law in December 2024.
Polling stations opened at 6 am, with over 1.08 million voting within the first hour and 2.5 million by 8 am. More than a third of the 44.39 million eligible voters had already participated in early voting.

Front-runner Lee Jae-myung, who narrowly lost to Yoon in the last election, is leading in opinion polls by 14 percentage points over conservative candidate Kim Moon Soo. Lee led the impeachment effort and famously climbed the National Assembly walls to protest martial law.
The winner, expected to emerge by midnight, will be sworn in immediately on June 4 for a full five-year term.
