A strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake was recorded at 6:58 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located 127 kilometers (79 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a shallow depth of 19.5 kilometers.

Following the tremor, the Pacific Tsunami Warning System briefly issued a tsunami alert but later withdrew it, easing concerns of widespread impact. No immediate reports of casualties or structural damage were confirmed. However, the region did experience several aftershocks, the strongest measuring up to 5.8 in magnitude.
This remote stretch of the Russian Far East has been experiencing heightened seismic activity, with multiple strong earthquakes recorded over the past two months. Despite its isolation, Kamchatka’s geological volatility continues to draw international monitoring, given its vulnerability to both earthquakes and tsunamis.
