A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao, Philippines, on Friday, prompting initial tsunami warnings and mass evacuations. The quake, originally recorded at 7.6, hit off the coast of Manay town in Davao Oriental at a depth of 20 km, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Although authorities had warned of “destructive” and “life-threatening” waves, the tsunami threat has now passed, Reuters reported. Schools in Davao City, home to about 5.4 million residents, were evacuated as a precaution. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. assured the public that rescue operations are underway and assistance is being delivered to affected areas. Local officials reported structural damage, including to buildings and a church in Davao Oriental. Aftershocks and further assessments are expected as authorities continue to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of communities across the region.
