A deadly paramotor attack struck a Thadingyut festival celebration and protest in Chaung U township, central Myanmar, on Monday evening, killing at least 24 people and injuring 47, according to the exiled National Unity Government. Around 100 people had gathered for a candlelight vigil opposing the military junta when a motorised paraglider dropped two bombs on the crowd. Witnesses described horrific scenes, with victims—including children—torn apart.

The People’s Defence Force said they received warnings of an airstrike but were unable to disperse in time. Amnesty International condemned the use of paramotors, calling it part of a “disturbing pattern” as Myanmar’s military increasingly relies on such methods due to aircraft shortages caused by sanctions. The vigil protested military conscription, the upcoming December elections, and demanded the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, with critics calling the planned polls a bid to legitimise the junta’s rule.
