Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni strongly opposed President Donald Trump’s newly announced 20% tariffs on European goods, warning they could trigger an economic conflict.
In a Facebook post, Meloni called the tariffs a “wrong measure” that would harm both the US and its allies. She vowed to pursue diplomacy, working with European partners to prevent a trade war that could weaken the West.

Trump unveiled the tariffs after US stock markets closed on Wednesday, imposing a 10% duty on most imports, with higher levies on key partners like the EU, Japan, and Israel. Declaring it “liberation day,” he defended the move as a step toward economic independence, claiming it would revive US manufacturing and break down foreign trade barriers.
While Trump hailed the tariffs as historic, early reactions from global leaders have been cautious, with many avoiding direct escalation.
