Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado was unable to attend the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony on Wednesday due to safety concerns, prompting her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, to receive the award on her behalf. Machado has been in hiding since Jan. 9, when she was briefly detained after a protest in Caracas. Norwegian Nobel Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes revealed that Machado had tried tirelessly to reach Oslo despite facing “extreme danger,” adding that she is safe and expected to arrive soon.

In an audio message released by the Nobel website, Machado expressed gratitude to those who risked their lives to help her travel, calling the award a recognition of the Venezuelan people’s resilience. Several Latin American leaders, including Argentina’s Javier Milei and Ecuador’s Daniel Noboa, attended the ceremony in solidarity. Machado’s prize honors her fight for democratic change in Venezuela.
