A senior Kremlin adviser is set to visit Washington this week, signaling renewed U.S.-Russia engagement under the Trump administration. Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund and a close ally of Vladimir Putin, will reportedly meet Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, to discuss potential pathways to ending the Ukraine war.

This marks the first visit by a top Russian official to Washington since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The U.S. has temporarily lifted sanctions on Dmitriev to facilitate the talks. He has previously played a behind-the-scenes role in negotiations, including recent discussions in Riyadh.
Trump, frustrated with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has shifted away from his predecessor’s military aid policies, instead pushing for a ceasefire. Witkoff, who has met Putin twice, leads the U.S. effort. However, tensions persist over a minerals deal with Kyiv, as Trump warns Zelensky against abandoning the agreement.
