Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s ruling coalition suffered a major setback in the latest parliamentary election, losing its majority in the 248-seat upper house, NHK reported on Monday. Ishiba’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner, Komeito, required 50 additional seats beyond their existing 75 to retain control but secured only 47, with one seat still undecided.

This marks the first time since its founding in 1955 that the LDP has lost majorities in both houses, following its lower house defeat in October. The result deepens Japan’s political instability and could invite pressure for Ishiba to step down or seek a new alliance.
Despite the blow, Ishiba vowed to continue leading amid key challenges, including U.S. tariff threats. “I will fulfill my responsibility as head of the No. 1 party and work for the country,” he stated.
