Tarrent-Arthur Henry is an author, pastor, certified coach, trainer, speaker with Maxwell Leadership, and a Mental Health Specialist and Advocate. He and his wife, Helen-Cummings Henry, have earned a spot on the SUCCESS 125 Awards list of most influential leaders by Success Magazine for 2022.

But before all of those impressive titles, he is a son, a husband, and a step-father. As a child raised by fervent believers in the black church, Henry has witnessed countless struggles with mental health. As a pastor and chaplain for over thirty years, Tarrent-Arthur Henry has seen first-hand the uphill battle of discussing and encouraging proper mental health care and support in black communities. He’s seen how untreated mental illness can lead to addiction, homelessness, jail time, and even suicide.

However, he’s also seen the transformational power of prayer combined with mental health treatment in communities with proper knowledge and support, and that’s why he’s committed to promoting understanding and compassion to change the landscape of mental health awareness in black communities nationwide. Tarrent-Arthur is passionate about providing education and resources to pastors and influential community workers to begin making changes where it matters the most. His hope is that providing an abundance of information will allow clergy members and community changemakers to better handle the sensitive caregiving necessary for those seeking assistance for emotional or psychological struggles.

Henry is committed to changing hearts and minds one conversation at a time. He believes that by breaking the silence and providing education on mental health issues, we can begin to break down barriers and build healthier communities inside and outside the church.

The problem is that many people walk around today without a sense of direction or purpose. Sure, they get up every morning, but they are just going through the motions of life. Mental illness affects one in five adults in the U.S., but training and resources in African American Communities are often nowhere to be found. Especially in churches where the subject is left unspoken, avoided, or swept under the rug. Henry is passionate about changing that. Providing proper training and resources to communities and churches is critical because, without understanding and open discussion, mental health will continue to go undiagnosed and untreated. As a person of faith, Tarrent-Arthur knows that God created us uniquely and intentionally. He knew our names before we were born, and He has a purpose for each of us. The journey to finding our purpose takes us on many paths–some are easy, and some are not so easy. As a church, we must support those struggling along their path.

For too long, mental health has been stigmatized in our communities,” says Tarrent-Arthur, “I’ve seen people struggling with depression who never sought help because they didn’t want anyone to know that they had a problem.” He believes that if we can start talking about it openly and without shame, we can create an environment where people can get the help they need—and ultimately find fulfilment in their lives again by helping others find theirs.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW OF AUTHOR TARRENT-ARTHUR HENRY WITH DE MODE

Q: Tarrent-Arthur, your journey from pastor to mental health advocate is quite inspiring. What prompted you to transition from the pulpit to promoting mental health awareness in black communities?

A. As a pastor, I witnessed firsthand the silent struggles within my community. Recognizing the stigma surrounding mental health, I felt compelled to bridge the gap between faith and wellness, empowering African-Americans to prioritize their mental well-being. My journey from the pulpit to mental health advocacy stems from a deep commitment to holistic healing and empowering individuals to thrive.

Q: As a pastor and chaplain for over thirty years, you've witnessed firsthand the struggles with mental health in black communities. Can you share some of the most pressing challenges you've observed in this regard?

A. In my three decades of pastoral and chaplaincy work, I've seen pervasive challenges in black communities regarding mental health. Stigma remains a formidable barrier, inhibiting individuals from seeking help. Additionally, systemic inequities exacerbate access to quality mental health care. Lack of culturally competent resources further compounds these issues, leaving many without adequate support for their mental well-being.

Q: Mental health is often stigmatized in many communities, particularly within religious contexts. How do you navigate breaking down these barriers and encouraging open discussions about mental health within church settings?

A. Within church settings, I employ a compassionate and inclusive approach, emphasizing that mental health is as crucial as physical health. Through sermons, workshops, and support groups, I foster a safe space for open dialogue, emphasizing biblical teachings of compassion and understanding. Collaborating with mental health professionals and integrating their expertise helps destigmatize mental health and promote holistic well-being within religious contexts.

Q: You've mentioned the importance of providing education and resources to pastors and community workers. Can you elaborate on the specific initiatives or programs you've developed to address this need?

A. To address the need for mental health education, I've developed comprehensive training programs for pastors and community workers. These initiatives include workshops, seminars, and online courses covering topics such as mental health awareness, counseling skills, and destigmatization strategies. Additionally, I facilitate partnerships with mental health organizations to provide resources and support tailored to the needs of pastors and community workers.

Q: Your commitment to promoting understanding and compassion for mental health issues is commendable. What strategies do you employ to foster empathy and support for individuals struggling with mental illness?

A. I prioritize empathy and support by normalizing conversations about mental health and fostering an environment of understanding and acceptance. Through storytelling, peer support groups, and educational resources, I cultivate empathy by encouraging individuals to share their experiences and perspectives. I emphasize the importance of active listening, validation, and unconditional support to create a safe and nurturing space for those struggling with mental illness.

Q: The intersection of faith and mental health can be complex. How do you reconcile religious beliefs with the need for professional mental health treatment and support?

A. I reconcile religious beliefs with the need for professional mental health treatment by emphasizing that seeking help is not a sign of weak faith but a courageous step toward healing. I emphasize the complementary nature of faith and mental health support, encouraging individuals to embrace both spiritual practices and evidence-based interventions as essential components of holistic well-being.

Q: In your experience, how can churches and faith-based organizations better support individuals dealing with mental health challenges without perpetuating stigma or shame?

A. Churches and faith-based organizations can better support individuals with mental health challenges by fostering a culture of understanding, acceptance, and compassion. This involves educating clergy and congregants about mental health, providing access to supportive resources and services, and creating safe spaces for open dialogue and destigmatization. By promoting empathy and inclusivity, religious communities can play a vital role in supporting an individual dealing with mental wellness.

Q: What advice do you have for individuals who may be hesitant to discuss their mental health concerns, particularly within religious communities?

A. For individuals hesitant to discuss mental health in religious communities, I advise starting small by confiding in trusted friends or clergy members. Seeking support groups or mental health professionals can provide additional avenues for sharing experiences in a safe environment. Remember, addressing mental health is a courageous step towards healing and should be met with compassion and understanding.

Q: As a mental health specialist and advocate, what do you believe are the most effective strategies for increasing access to mental health care and support in underserved communities?

A. Increasing access to mental health care in underserved communities requires a multifaceted approach. This includes destigmatizing mental health, providing culturally competent services, integrating mental health into primary care settings, expanding telehealth options, and investing in community-based outreach programs. Collaborations between mental health professionals, community organizations, and policymakers are essential for addressing systemic barriers and promoting equitable access to care.

Q: Your commitment to changing hearts and minds one conversation at a time is commendable. Can you share any memorable experiences or success stories from your efforts to promote mental health awareness?

A. One memorable success story involved a congregant who, after attending mental health workshops at our church, sought professional help for long-standing depression. Through therapy and support, they experienced significant improvement in their mental well-being and were able to regain a sense of hope and purpose. Witnessing this transformation underscored the power of education and support in promoting mental health awareness.

Q: How do you envision the role of faith communities evolving in addressing mental health issues in the future?

A. In the future, I see faith communities playing an increasingly active role in addressing mental health issues by becoming hubs for education, support, and advocacy. They will foster inclusive environments that prioritize mental wellness, offer accessible resources and services, and collaborate with mental health professionals to provide holistic care. Together, they will lead the charge in destigmatizing mental illness and promoting healing.

Q: What message do you hope to convey through your advocacy work in mental health awareness, particularly within black communities?

A. Through my advocacy work in mental health awareness, particularly within black communities, I aim to convey the message that seeking help is not a sign of weakness but a courageous act of self-care. I strive to dismantle stigma, foster empathy, and empower individuals to prioritize their mental well-being, knowing that they are worthy of support and healing.

Q: Finally, what are your aspirations for the future of mental health awareness and support, both within religious communities and society at large?

A. My aspirations include fostering a culture where mental health is prioritized, destigmatized, and seamlessly integrated into religious communities and society. I envision comprehensive mental health education, accessible resources, and collaborative partnerships that empower individuals to seek help without fear or shame. Through compassion, empathy, and understanding, we can create a world where everyone has the support they need to thrive mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
