This painting was inspired by the torso of a female mannequin. To be able to capture the appeal of this torso was a challenge for me. I put my imagination to work in order to capture the essence of the curves and angles of this particular torso. I wanted to make it look as real as that of a woman’s anatomy. My imagination afforded me the ability to replicate the same qualities on canvas in a more heightened, abstract manner. Colours interact with each other to highlight the curves and angles of this particular work.

Blue Trees in A Forest
The painting, Blue Trees in A Forest, is a continuation of the theme regarding the Birch trees that surrounded my property in the mountains of Effort, Pennsylvania. I could not help but be inspired by the ubiquitous presence of these special trees. They provided me with a certain feeling of tranquillity and joy. They also served as the playground for songbirds from spring through fall. Once I embarked upon the task of capturing these trees on canvas, my imagination led me into various forms of abstraction. This painting represents a modern artwork whose colours echo back to the beautiful Impressionist School of Art.

Q. How Do You Believe Art and Literature Shape the Emotional and Intellectual Evolution of Society?
Society has evolved emotionally and intellectually over the years due to the changes that have taken place within the realm of art and literature. Current society is much more sophisticated and worldly because of those changes. There is now greater freedom of expression than there was in previous times-this in and of itself is an extraordinary change, knowing how insular-minded previous generations were in those particular realms of social history. All we have to do is take a retrospective look at the fashions of the 1920s and compare them with the fashions of today.
Women were not allowed to show their skin in public in those times. In the field of literature, books that dealt with sex in a graphic manner, or even in a movie, were subjected to censorship or worse, banned from public view. The change in those two genres of human endeavour over the years is really quite remarkable. Being alive in the 21st century gives us a greater perspective on the art and literature of previous times and therefore helps to foster intellectual growth. This really shows the evolution in comparison to the art and literature being produced today.
Because of this, I say, welcome to the Digital Age and the Age of Artificial Intelligence and the implications they have for Art, Literature and Society in general. The brilliant minds that came up with these inventions certainly demonstrated intellectual growth.
Q. Your work spans painting, poetry, and storytelling. What draws you to express yourself through multiple artistic forms?
This is an interesting question. I consider myself fortunate to be able to express myself in three different genres of art: as a visual artist, author and poet. I am equally fond of all three because they represent the best of my artistic abilities. It is sometimes a fact that when a person is gifted in one regard, it also spills over into other areas of self-expression. To prove this point, I would like to cite the case of famous French artists, Henri Matisse and Edgar Degas, both of whom were extremely talented in the field of painting as well as the daunting task of sculpture. I would also like to mention Michael Angelo, the ultimate multi-talented Renaissance Artist.
I discovered my various talents, or the incipient stages, as a young boy growing up on the blessed island of Jamaica. My fondness for painting was inspired by the beauty of the tropical landscape and the sea breeze that gently stirred them to life. My journey as a short story writer was inspired by my ability to recall the adventurous trips I had taken to the country parishes for summer holidays as a young boy growing up in Jamaica. Poetry came naturally to me, like the other gifts I was born with. My love for poetry was nurtured by my elementary school teachers, who made us memorise the works of some of the best-known poets and who instilled the importance of poetry in our daily lives.
Q. In what ways has your journey from Jamaica to the international art world shaped your views on identity, culture, and creativity?
My journey from Jamaica to the international art world has been an interesting and fascinating one, because of three important factors: identity, culture and creativity. Being from a different culture and then becoming absorbed by another is never an easy process. However, growing up with confidence in my artistic abilities and being from a dynamic culture for which Jamaica is known are all factors that imbued me with a strong sense of identity. While growing up in Jamaica, my parents instilled in me values such as discipline, respect and love of education-guiding principles that made a difference in my dealings with people from different cultures. The importance of culture in the life of a nation can never be overstated. It is the foundation upon which its citizens grow and excel. I would like to mention Bob Marley and Usain Bolt among many other world-renowned personalities from Jamaica who have excelled. My success in the field of art, poetry and literature has always been a source of pride to me; it speaks about the culture and identity on which I stand creatively.
Q. In your view, what is the true purpose of an artist in today’s world?
In my view, the true purpose of an artist in today’s world is to draw attention to the inequities and suffering that exist on a global scale. Our world is in need of redemption. It would seem there is a general feeling of malaise that has afflicted the world. An artist should be a “guiding light” in terms of making our world a better and more beautiful place- a place where everyone can coexist peacefully and show love, kindness and respect to one another. It is important for me to share my talent with others and to use the beauty I create to counteract the spirit of ugliness we sometimes encounter in others. If my work can awaken even a spark of compassion or inspire meaningful change in a single life, then I believe it has fulfilled its highest purpose.
Q. Many of your works carry emotional depth and reflection. How important is vulnerability in the creative process?
The experiences in life that have most profoundly affected my artistic philosophy of serenity and beauty for beauty’s sake, are the sights of suffering and destruction caused by wars. I strive for beauty and serenity over the wholesale destruction of our environment caused by wars and overt industrialization. There would be less turmoil in the world if people were allowed to live a life of peace and serenity, and enjoy an environment surrounded by beauty. People respond emotionally to beautiful works of art. Without beauty our souls would wither and die. I paint images of beauty to counteract the ugliness we encounter in our daily lives.
Q. You have spent decades creating and exhibiting internationally. What has remained constant in your vision throughout the years?
The things that have remained constant in my vision throughout the years are my discipline, dedication and passion for making art.
Q. How do you balance technical mastery with emotional authenticity in your work?
Technical mastery in my art was achieved by art studies in Europe and the Art Students League, New York, where I studied under abstract expressionist artist Joseph Stapleton. Professor Stapleton recognised my talent, became my mentor and did everything possible to support my journey. He even arranged an exhibition of my paintings in the gallery at the league while I was a student. I achieved emotional authenticity in my works because when I paint, I become totally lost in the creative process.
Q. What role does silence, solitude, or introspection play in your creative journey?
Silence, solitude and introspection play a very important role in the creative process. It is fascinating when one comes under the spell of these abstract imperatives-magic occurs on the canvas. Sometimes, I myself am surprised by the results achieved. Solitude, silence and introspection are conducive to creativity because they enhance our ability to think clearly. I would not have been able to achieve the emotional intensity that the works demand without the ability to think clearly.
Q. As both a poet and painter, do words and images speak differently to the human soul?
Do words and images speak differently to the human soul? As a poet and a painter, I would say no. They both have the ability to move us equally through our emotional reaction. It is a human thing. Words and ideas are sometimes constructed in poetry to elicit a strong emotional response, which achieves the ability to speak to our emotions. The same could be said for Art. How many times have we heard others say that something was so beautiful that it moved them to tears? I for one was personally overcome upon seeing the paintings of Vincent Van Gogh at his namesake museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Q. What wisdom has art taught you about love, humanity, and the meaning of life?
Wisdom has taught me three important things about love, humanity and the meaning of life. These are they. Number one: Love can be evasive. Number two: Love can sometimes be the most violent form of possession. Number three: Love can be the most blissful of all emotions. One of the reasons that I wrote my book of love poems, The Many Silences of Love, is that art has taught me that there are two types of people in the world: Those who are kind and helpful, and those who are mean-spirited and repulsive. Wisdom taught me the importance of having relatives and friends and good art collectors.
Q. When future generations look back at your work, what lasting message would you hope they discover?
When future generations look back on my works, the lasting message I hope they discover is that I am a humanist- a person who loves humanity and cares about their welfare. There is no greater pleasure than knowing that I made a difference in the lives of others and that I helped to make our world a better and more beautiful place.
I have always believed that art is far more than an aesthetic pursuit; it is a language of the soul capable of transcending borders, cultures, and generations. If my paintings and writings endure, I hope they do so not merely because they were created with skill, but because they were born of empathy, integrity, and a sincere desire to celebrate the human spirit. Long after my name has faded from memory, I hope the values woven into my work—love, courage, kindness, and our shared humanity—continue to resonate. Ultimately, I would like my legacy to be measured not by accolades or acclaim, but by the quiet yet enduring influence my work has on those who encounter it, inspiring them to see beauty more clearly, live with greater compassion, and leave the world gentler than they found it.
Q. How does it feel to be recognised by DE MODE as the “Author of the Year 2026,” and what does this honour mean to you personally and professionally?
It is a wonderful feeling to receive the DE MODE's “Artist & Author of the Year” Award. I am overwhelmed by this recognition and the immense honour it has afforded me. Thank you DE MODE. My gratitude is eternal. This honour has filled me with great joy and pride. I accept this award with great humility.
