A deadly strike on a hospital in southern Gaza on Monday claimed at least eight lives, including four journalists. Among those killed was 33-year-old freelancer Mariam Dagga, who had been reporting for the Associated Press since the start of the Gaza war. Dagga had recently covered the worsening humanitarian crisis, documenting Nasser Hospital doctors’ struggle to save starving children. Al Jazeera confirmed the death of its journalist Mohammed Salam, while Reuters reported the deaths of its contractor Hussam al-Masri and injuries to photographer Hatem Khaled, also a contractor.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) highlighted that the Israel-Hamas conflict has become one of the deadliest for media workers, with 192 journalists killed over 22 months. By contrast, CPJ has documented 18 journalist deaths during the Russia-Ukraine war. Both the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office and the Israeli military declined to comment on the hospital attack.
