The US Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the first human case of New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite, in Maryland. The patient had recently traveled from El Salvador and has since been treated and fully recovered, according to Reuters. Health officials, including the CDC, confirmed there’s been no spread to other people or animals.
The New World screwworm is a fly that lays eggs in open wounds, where maggots hatch and feed on living flesh, making it one of the most dangerous parasites. Symptoms include painful, non-healing sores, bleeding, swelling, foul odors, and in severe cases, visible maggots. Patients may even feel movement under their skin, or in the nose, mouth, or eyes.

Travelers in regions where screwworms are common face greater risk, especially if they have cuts or weakened immune systems. Prompt medical care is crucial to avoid serious complications from this gruesome infection.
