China has reiterated that no trade discussions with the United States are taking place, countering President Donald Trump's claims of a call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. In an interview with Time magazine published Friday, Trump mentioned Xi "called," but offered no details. However, China’s commerce ministry denied on Thursday that any negotiations were underway.
Reinforcing this stance, Beijing's embassy in Washington stated via WeChat on Saturday that there have been "no consultations or negotiations" on tariff issues, dismissing U.S. claims as "misleading." Without naming Trump or Xi, China emphasized that the trade conflict was "initiated by the U.S." and said the U.S. must "remove all unilateral tariff measures" to resolve tensions. Meanwhile, Trump hinted at forthcoming trade agreements with other U.S. partners. The world’s two largest economies remain locked in a growing trade war, with U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods reaching as high as 145 percent.
