More than 100 people have been confirmed dead after catastrophic flash floods struck central Texas, with search and rescue teams still working around the clock to locate missing persons. Heavy rains north of San Antonio early Friday caused the Guadalupe River to rise over 8 meters in just 45 minutes, triggering one of the worst flash floods the U.S. has seen in decades.
Among the most devastating losses occurred at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls in the Texas Hill Country. The camp confirmed that 27 campers and counselors were killed in the floods, and at least 10 campers and one counselor remain missing. “Our hearts are broken,” read a statement from the camp, which asked for continued prayers and privacy for affected families.

In Kerr County alone, where several summer camps are located, 84 bodies have been recovered—28 of them children. Searchers reported finding some survivors clinging to trees as raging floodwaters swept away cabins, trailers, and vehicles.
Officials are now facing questions about the preparedness and response to the floods. While the National Weather Service issued advisories on Thursday and multiple flash flood warnings early Friday, many residents and campers reported receiving no alerts. Poor cell phone service in remote areas is being cited as a possible factor.
Local authorities, including Kerrville City Manager Dalton Rice, have pledged a thorough review of emergency protocols. “Once the search and rescue efforts are complete, we will dive into what went wrong,” Rice said.
Senator Ted Cruz pushed back against claims that government budget cuts affected emergency alerts, urging unity during this crisis. President Donald Trump has signed a major disaster declaration and plans to visit the flood-stricken region on Friday.
The death toll is expected to rise, with more rain forecasted in the coming days.
