Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's newly imposed 25% auto tariffs, calling them a "direct attack" on Canada. Trump announced the tariffs on Wednesday, stating they are "permanent" and will apply to all foreign-made cars starting April 2.

Carney vowed to defend Canadian workers and businesses while awaiting details of Trump’s executive order before considering countermeasures. He criticized the move as "unjustified" and a violation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). In response, he plans to pause his election campaign to lead a special Cabinet meeting on U.S. relations.
The tariffs, which follow previous duties on steel and aluminum, are expected to strain trade ties with key partners. Trump initially granted Canada and Mexico a one-month exemption but revoked it, arguing that only U.S.-made vehicles should be tariff-free. Carney urged Canada to boost market diversification and reduce dependence on the U.S. economy.
