Lord Byron, one of the greatest British poets of the Romantic era, found both solace and inspiration in the enchanting city of Venice. After the collapse of his marriage, he left England behind and, in 1816, arrived at the Hotel Gran Bretagna, where he took up residence overlooking the Grand Canal. At just 28, Venice became his refuge, a city that would profoundly shape his life and literary work.

During his time in Venice, Byron immersed himself in its vibrant cultural and intellectual circles, frequenting the legendary Florian Café in St. Mark’s Square—an iconic meeting place for literary greats such as Carlo Goldoni, Charles Dickens, and Wolfgang Goethe. The city’s beauty and mystique left an indelible mark on the poet, influencing his writing and reinforcing his status as a key figure of the Second Romanticism alongside John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Combining literary analysis with historical exploration, she brings to life the poet’s experiences, offering a fresh perspective on his enduring connection to the city.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW OF AURORA SORANZO WITH DE MODE

Q: Your book explores the intersection of history, biography, and literary analysis. How did you

navigate these different facets of your subject?

A. In my book, I weave together historical context, personal biography, and literary analysis to create a layered narrative. To navigate these facets, I carefully balance the historical details with the emotional and intellectual journeys of the figures I explore. It requires a delicate touch, ensuring that neither the historical setting nor the personal experiences overshadow one another, but rather inform and enrich the story as a whole.

Q: Did your research on Lord Byron lead you to any surprising or unexpected discoveries about hislife and times?

A. My research on Lord Byron uncovered fascinating contradictions within his life. One of the most surprising aspects was his complex relationship with his own identity and the tension between his public persona and private struggles. His deep contradictions—both a symbol of romantic rebellion and an emotionally turbulent figure—challenged my preconceived notions and deepened my appreciation for his legacy.

Q: What are your favorite literary devices and how do you use them in your own writing?

A. I am particularly drawn to imagery and symbolism, as these tools can carry so much meaning beneath the surface of a narrative. I often use them to evoke emotions or to reflect the internal worlds of characters. Metaphors also play a big role in my writing, allowing me to explore abstract ideas or complex relationships in a more accessible and resonant way.

Q: Which authors have most significantly influenced your work?

A. Many authors have shaped my work, but I would say that Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and Italo Calvino have had the most significant influence. Each of them has taught me something unique about narrative structure, the fluidity of time, and the power of language to bend reality. Their exploration of human consciousness and identity continues to inspire my own writing.

Q: How can fashion be used to challenge societal norms and express individuality?

A. Fashion has the power to break free from societal expectations and serve as a personal statement. Through fashion, individuals can push back against rigid norms, express unique identities, or even challenge political and cultural ideologies. For me, fashion is a form of resistance as well as self-expression, reflecting changing times and personal evolution.

Q: What role does storytelling play in shaping our understanding of fashion and its history?

A. Storytelling plays a crucial role in how we understand fashion's evolution. It is through stories that we connect the dots between individual garments and larger cultural shifts. Fashion isn't just about trends—it's about the lives lived in those garments, the stories they carry, and the way they reflect societal values at different points in history.

Q: How do you see the relationship b/w personal identity and the clothes we choose to wear?

A. I see personal identity and fashion as intrinsically linked. What we wear often reveals something deeper about who we are—our values our mood, and how we wish to be perceived by the world. The act of choosing clothes is a deliberate statement, whether conscious or not, about how we navigate our space in the world and how we relate to others.

Q: How do you see the role of literature in contemporary society?

A. Literature remains a vital force in contemporary society, offering a lens through which we can understand ourselves, each other, and the world around us. In a time of constant change and uncertainty, literature provides a sense of continuity, allowing us to grapple with complex issues in a way that transcends time and place. It encourages empathy and critical thinking, which are vital in navigating today’s challenges.

Q: What are your favorite Italian and English literary works?

A. As for Italian works, I am deeply fond of Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities and Luigi Pirandello's plays, especially Six Characters in Search of an Author. In English literature, I am drawn to the works of Virginia Woolf, particularly Mrs. Dalloway, and the poetry of W.B. Yeats. Both traditions offer rich explorations of human consciousness and the nature of existence, which I find endlessly inspiring.

Q: What are your thoughts on the current state of Italian literature on the international stage?

A. Italian literature has always had a significant place in global literary conversations, but I believe it is currently undergoing a kind of reinvention. While traditional voices remain strong, younger Italian authors are breaking new ground with innovative narratives and diverse thematic explorations. The digital age has allowed Italian writers to connect with a broader international audience, and I see this as a promising development for the future of Italian literature.
