Over 2,145 senior-ranking NASA employees are expected to depart following the Trump administration’s proposal to slash nearly 25% of the agency’s funding. According to Politico, which cited internal documents, the move is part of a broader effort to streamline federal operations and reduce government spending.

A letter dated May 2, 2025, from the Executive Office of the US President to Senator Susan Collins, Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, outlined recommendations for the fiscal year 2026 budget. This followed a detailed review of 2025 spending.
The proposed budget severely impacts eight of NASA’s nine major funding areas, including space science, mission support, Earth science, space technology, human exploration systems, the ISS, aeronautics, and the STEM office.
These cuts are likely to stall vital space exploration missions and reshape the agency's future workforce, marking one of the largest organizational shifts in NASA’s recent history.
