Q: What inspired you to craft the enigmatic character of Maverick Black in your novel 'Maverick'?
A. The character ‘Maverick’ has held a special place in my heart for many years before I decided to write Maverick’s journey. Maverick Black has a powerful and mysterious personality that I could visualise within my mind and a character that I have always felt connected to. I had a sensation that Maverick was always walking alongside me on my own journey and I remember the day perfectly when the first few words of ‘Maverick’ were crafted. I was sitting alone on a beautiful country property; I was surrounded by nature and reflecting upon my own journey as I lay upon the lush grass with an abundance of fruit trees surrounding me and the sun shining brightly from above. I considered in that moment how ‘Maverick’ as a character had his own unique journey and I was inspired to write his story – an emotional and transformative journey as Maverick experiences his own triumphs and challenges within life.
Q: Could you share more about the emotional journey Maverick undergoes and the challenges he faces throughout the narrative?
A. Mavericks’ journey explores a multitude of emotions; anger and fear, sadness and disgust, joy and surprise, love and optimism. I felt it was important to project Maverick’s emotions bravely as he experiences some of life’s most challenging moments – moments that resonate with so many readers and moments that represent the genuine aspects of being ‘human’. If we experience anger, that may manifest into rage, if we experience sadness, our grief is palpable, and if we experience joy – perhaps that can lead to a sense of serenity and peace. The narrative explores these emotions further within the novel to reflect the emotive journey Maverick experiences.
Q: Is there a personal connection or experience that influenced Maverick's depth and complexity as a character? Music plays a significant role in Maverick's life. How did you approach weaving this aspect into the narrative, and what significance does it hold for you as an author?
A. Music is a significant part of Maverick’s character. Maverick is a wildly talented musician, although prefers to be heard and not seen as an artist. I believe as an author I resonate with that aspect of Maverick whereby I prefer to be hidden in the ‘background’, although – music and creativity play a pivotal role in both of our lives. Maverick expresses his emotions through music; his guitar is his outlet to express his emotions whereas writing is mine – although, I truly believe Maverick and I share the same sentiment that music can truly start to heal the soul and bring love back into our hearts.
Q: The contrast between Maverick's fire and darkness is intriguing. How did you balance these elements in his characterization?
A. This was an interesting balance to weave Maverick’s magnitude and complex characteristics. A key aspect of the novel is: ‘Maverick burns with the intensity of a wildfire’ which is a reflection of his powerful emotions – Maverick’s hate, love, anger, regret, pain and intensity are a reflection of the passionate fire that burns intensely within him. The novel explores this further as Maverick’s emotions and experiences burn alike a fierce, yet unplanned, uncontrolled and unpredictable wildfire as he navigates his own journey and emotions. Maverick’s emotions were crafted to encapsulate the significance of this within the novel – they light a fire within him that burn with intensity and passion with everything he feels and experiences, although in contrast – Maverick’s fire conflicts with his own darkness. Maverick’s darkness is a reflection of the demons he is fighting within himself as he hides his deepest and darkest thoughts from the world that surrounds him and therefore – the darkness that envelopes him is a reflection of his hidden emotions burning within.
Q: Could you describe the writing journey for 'Maverick'—from ideation to completion—and any challenges or triumphs you encountered along the way?
A. As described earlier, the concept of ‘Maverick’ as a character was so extraordinary within my life as I felt strongly that he was already walking alongside me each day as I explored my own journey. ‘Maverick’ has been a powerful presence within my own life for so many years before I decided to craft his story, making a very personal decision to share with the readers his mysterious – yet compelling personality that I envisioned. Maverick provides an emotional and transformative journey as he experiences life’s trials and his journey captures so many elements and emotions; admiration and appreciation, anger and fear, confusion and uncertainty, intrigue and surprise – combined with desire, love, romance and heartbreak. It was incredibly challenging to depict these emotions as each and every emotion was so raw as Mavericks’ character evolved throughout the novel.
Q: What message or emotions do you hope readers take away after immersing themselves in 'Maverick' and Maverick Black's journey?
A. The personal decision to share Maverick with the readers was an incredibly difficult road – but as I reflected upon the people surrounding me who propel me forward, guide me and offer their unconditional support – I felt compelled to share Maverick’s journey in the hopes that at least one reader would connect with his character, understand his complex challenges and the emotions that encompass him. Ultimately, we are all interconnected – shaping our destinies together and if a reader can be inspired by my work to be brave, be fearless and chase their adventures – then I will be right there – walking alongside them as they chase their own dreams.
