Their partnership provided mutual support.

David served honourably in the Air Force Medical Service Corps for over two decades, with numerous deployments. He worked his way up from enlisted airman to Major. His work ethic and care for fellow service members made David a decorated veteran.

After retiring, David began a second career with a medical company, rising to regional vice president. This allowed David to utilize his military experience in leadership, organization, and efficiency.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW OF AUTHOR D. R. WELLS WITH DE MODE

Q: Please share a bit about your journey from a career in the US Air Force to becoming a full-time author. What inspired this transition?

A. Since childhood, David's passion was reading, and he wrote stories and poems that were never revealed to anyone. His military service and subsequent role as a healthcare executive, with its exposure to diverse cultures and compelling narratives, deepened his storytelling perspective. Reading "Aurora's Angel" by Emily Noon inspired his leap into writing, leading to "Walking Out of Time," a blend of history, fantasy, and romance.

Q: "Walking Out of Time" is a unique blend of romance, mystery, and magic. What sparked the idea for this unique story, and how did it evolve during the writing process?

A. The author's passion for history and fantasy inspired "Walking Out of Time," blending these genres with romance and mystery. As the author wrote, the characters and plot took unexpected turns, organically evolving into a multidimensional tale that captivated readers. Like mixing paints, the author found that combining genres creates something more vibrant, unique, and compelling.

Q: Your advocacy for equality is admirable. How do you incorporate themes of equality and societal challenges into your writing, and what messages do you hope your readers take away from your books?

A. Bearing witness to unfairness deeply troubles and motivates David. He works to craft empathetic tales exploring discrimination and prejudice through thoughtful characters. His hope is these stories inspire greater acceptance, compassion, and courage in readers. Though fiction alone cannot erase injustice, he aims to nurture our shared humanity through writing.

Q: The protagonist of your book, Jaymes Welch, is described as a lawyer who stands up for the underdog. What inspired the creation of this character, and what qualities do you admire most in Jaymes?

A. Jaymes reflects the author's values shaped by his life experiences supporting a fellow service member outed under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell." Though it initially hurt his career, that defining moment opened his eyes to injustice. Like Jaymes, he tries to use his skills and voice to tirelessly advocate for the vulnerable. She embodies his belief that one person can stand up, speak out, and bend the arc toward justice.

Q: Beah Stewart, the other lead character, is a computer whiz working for the British government. Can you tell us more about Beah's character development and how she complements Jaymes in the story?

A. Reserved and relationship-adverse Jaymes contrasts with outgoing, impulsive Beah and her lively love life. Beah's warmth helps guarded Jaymes to embrace intimacy, while Jaymes encourages Beah to slow down and gain perspective. Their opposing natures highlight their individual growth arcs as introspective Jaymes opens up and candid Beah thinks beyond the moment. Together they find balance.

Q: "Walking Out of Time" combines elements of time travel and historical exploration. What research or preparation did you undertake to ensure the accuracy of these elements in your narrative?

A. While not traditional time travel, Walking Out of Time explores spiritual time travel and forbidden love's strength over centuries. Most research focused on the North Berwick Witch Trials, immersing in the era. The author's wife Sharon, a history buff and superb genealogist, meticulously vetted all details and even created family genealogies back to Eden through her immense expertise. Together they worked to bring that historic setting to life while crafting a novel about familial bonds' strength over time.

Q: "Walking Out of Time" has achieved remarkable success on Amazon. What has been the most rewarding part of this journey as an author for you, and how has this success impacted your writing career?

A. The most rewarding part for the author has been hearing from readers who connected deeply with the characters, knowing the story resonated enough to touch lives, which is profoundly humbling. The author set out to explore universal human bonds, so this reaction affirms that goal. While accolades are wonderful, the real reward is the community of readers and authors. The author's hope is that success inspires more people to step out of their comfort zones and discover new perspectives. The author feels honoured to build enthusiasm for stories that reveal timeless truths.

Q: As an advocate for equality and a writer of diverse characters, how do you approach the representation of diff backgrounds and perspectives in your work?

A. With empathy, nuance and care, the author tries to craft diverse characters. The author aims to transcend tropes and capture universal truths, guided by friendships with Sapphic fiction authors whose perspectives shape the approach. Backstories honor real struggles while highlighting shared humanity. The goal is to resonate with stories that speak across backgrounds. If these perspectives catalyze more inclusion and understanding, the author has succeeded.

Q: Can you give us a glimpse into your future writing projects? Are there any upcoming books or themes you're excited to explore in your next literary endeavours?

A. The author is currently working on the follow-up tentatively titled "Whispers in the Mist." Like its predecessor, it has diverse characters and blends genres with magic at its heart. It features a new protagonist, Blake Sinclair, a Pulitzer-winning author with a difficult past, plus endearing new characters. Old friends reappear too.
