Contouring is a powerful makeup technique that adds definition, structure, and balance to your features. By using a combination of shadows and highlights, you can enhance your natural bone structure and create a sculpted look tailored to your unique face shape.
For round faces, contouring focuses on creating the illusion of length. Apply a matte contour shade along the sides of your forehead, beneath your cheekbones, and along your jawline to create dimension. Highlight the center of your forehead, nose bridge, and chin to elongate the face.

If you have a square face, the goal is to soften strong angles. Apply contour along the sides of your forehead and under your cheekbones, blending well to avoid harsh lines. A touch of highlight on the center of your forehead and chin adds balance.
For oval faces, which are naturally balanced, contouring is minimal. Lightly sculpt under the cheekbones and along the jawline to enhance definition while keeping the look soft and natural.
A heart-shaped face benefits from contouring the temples and sides of the forehead to reduce width at the top of the face. Apply contour under the cheekbones and a bit on the chin to create symmetry, then highlight the under-eye area and center of the face.
If you have a long face, focus on contouring the top of the forehead and the tip of the chin to visually shorten the face. Add a subtle highlight to the cheekbones and under the eyes to create width.
The key to flawless contouring is blending. Using the right brushes or a damp makeup sponge ensures soft, natural shadows rather than harsh lines. With practice, contouring becomes a personalized tool to enhance your best features, no matter your face shape.
