EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW OF AUTHOR JENNIFER MARCUS WITH DE MODE

Q: "Breaking the Bonds" delves into powerful life stories, including abandonment, abuse, and survival. What motivated you to share your personal journey in this book?

A. Friends that know parts of my story always encouraged me to share my story. With the passion of wanting to help youth become all that they are destined for it was time. From there It became about finding a way use my own personal stories to inspire, to help, and to let others know that they are not alone.

Q: Your experiences with racism, abuse, and child abandonment are intense and challenging. How did these experiences shape your perspective on life, and what compelled you to empower others through your story?

A. All of these events showed me about the type of person that I did not want to become and more importantly it shaped me into the type of person I wanted to become and could be proud of. Someone that other can learn from.

Q: Combining your experiences into a book that offers strategies for overcoming challenges is a significant undertaking. What was the driving force behind structuring your book to offer both narratives and actionable guidance?

A. Through wanting to ensure that the youth reading knew they were not alone, that they are seen. From there the book just took on a life of its own and became something that was needed rather than just something that was written. I wrote a book from that child in all of the events to others that are experiencing similar, that know others that are experiencing it, and for those that feel alone and do not know what to do.

Q: Your transition from facing adversity to becoming a successful speaker, empowerment coach, and business owner is inspiring. Can you share some pivotal moments or realizations that propelled you toward these achievements?

A. I think the first major pivot was at age 15 when I was shot yet demanded more out of life. I demanded the future that I wanted. It was that goal that kept me focused, driven, and wanting more. From there It hit me one day as I was evaluating my mindset. I though to myself “what right do I have not to share my story and how I got to where I am. If I do not share it then who will?”

Q: Empowering others to master their challenges seems to be a core aspect of your work. How do you hope your book will resonate with readers facing their own obstacles or seeking transformation?

A. I think the biggest takeaway from the book is that others have been through and are going through the same things they are. Whether it becomes a personal journey they take on themselves or becomes a discussion point, it is their tool to use as they need.

Q: You mention a dedicated workbook tailored for individual reflections. How do you envision readers utilizing this workbook alongside the book, and what outcomes do you hope it will facilitate?

A. My hope for the workbook is two parts. The first is that they use the chapter questions to reflect on how the stories resonate with what they are going through or have been through. The second is to give practical tools on how to journal. Using the journal as a way to get their thoughts and feelings out, even if they are not ready to discuss it yet. I hope in the long term it will facilitate discussions and to use their stories to help others.

Q: As someone who has faced multifaceted challenges at a young age, what advice do you have for individuals currently navigating difficult circumstances?

A. I know it sounds repetitive, but I want the to know that they are not alone. Know that others before them have been there and regardless of what they have been through or are going through it does not dictate their future.

Q: Being a keynote speaker and empowerment coach requires connecting with diverse audiences. How do you tailor your message to resonate with different age groups and backgrounds?

A. When speaking to youth I am continually changing the content depending on who is in the audience. Working closely with the teachers and the administration is the biggest advantage I have. This is because they know what the students need and what would be too much for them.

Q: Throughout your presentations and coaching, what are the most common misconceptions or obstacles you encounter when helping others break their own bonds or overcome challenges?

A. The biggest challenge is helping them to see that they are not alone and that they a strong enough to change it or to overcome it. Then you also have understanding that in a lot of families they apply the rule that you do not discuss what goes on in the house. The best thing that you can do in this circumstance is to show them that speaking up and using their voice does matter.

Q: What do you hope readers will take away from "Breaking the Bonds," and how do you envision this book making a lasting impact on those who engage with it?

A. I hope that it will help them to see that others have been through this and that it has not stopped us from following our dreams and goals. I want them to know that there is hope even when it all seems dark. Most importantly I want them to know that resiliency is there superpower and with it they can achieve anything.
